And is confusing.
You may need to read this two or three times to get it.
First real anything into this fandom beyond that Faulty Wiring thing, give me time. I'll get better.

When Sammy was eight he was in a car accident.
**
Mesa, Arizona.
The intersection of Baseline and Extension.
Sammy and Dad and Dean, t-boned by a driver who fell asleep at the wheel.
Sammy sitting in the backseat with a flashlight and highlighter and The Werewolf Encyclopedia, going through the book and making his own corrections.
Dean sleeping in the front seat with his legs up and against the window, his head pillowed on his jacket on his backpack stuffed in the leg space.
Sammy sees the crash like snapshots through a camera.
The ending of Dean's new Metallica tape on the radio.
Click, flash.
Watching his marker drag jaggedly cross the page.
Click, flash.
A bright light and a hard jolt.
Click, flash.
Sitting outside of the wrecked car with a paramedic and a scratchy blanket.
Click, flash.
The huge metal machine they had to use to pry Dean out of the car.
Click, flash.
Blood.
Click, flash.
Dad crying.
Click, flash.
Sitting in the ambulance, staring at his big brother's broken body.
Click, flash.
The tube down Dean's throat and the feel of the doctor's voice.
Click, flash.
**
Sammy wets the bed and wakes up crying for a solid week and doesn't know why.
Dean makes fun of him and starts the shower and Dad yells at Dean and strips the sheets and flips the mattress.
They spend another two weeks at Kyrene De Los Ninos before they find the Chupacabra that's been eating the sheep around town.
Dean twists his ankle running from the police and narrowly misses falling face-first into a cactus after hopping a fence.
They leave in the middle of the night and make it to Baseline and McClintock before Sammy starts screaming.
Dean is leaning against the dashboard with his hurt leg on the headrest singing along to "Wherever I May Roam."
Sammy screams and yells and kicks and throws a temper tantrum until Dad pulls the car over in a Circle K.
Sammy climbs out of the car and screams and yells more and the clerk comes out and asks if everything is okay and Dad says yes and Sammy doesn't get back in the car until Dean drags him in and shoves him against and the window and complains about having to give up "shotgun" just because Sammy's going to wet himself again.
Dean's still pouting and Dad's still angry when they get going once more. Sammy crawls almost completely into Dean's lap behind Dad's seat and Dean grumbles and tells him to watch out for the leg.
Dad turns the tape back on and this time it's only Sammy's books that get crushed and ruined.
**
When Sammy was eight he was in a car accident.
This time Dean survived.

I didn't find it overly confusing either. I got in on the first try, but I got The Machinist on the first viewing. (Still need to see Momento though)

*Blushes* Thank you! I was really afraid I'd mess this up.
I love fics that show Sam's powers when he was younger because they just HAD to manifest in some way. I'm also a big fan of Sam protecting Dean for once.
I totally think Sam's powers have been there forever too; I just think that until Jessica he kinda... not so much "ignored" them but I think he repressed them. Made himself forget them before he woke up.
And? I can't help but love the idea of the little brother saving the big brother.
My favorite part of it was probably the repeatition of the first and last line. I love it when stories have a strong line/image that repeats throughout.
Thank you again! I love a nice repetitive image myself and I'm glad I got to use one here.
I didn't find it overly confusing either. I got in on the first try, but I got The Machinist on the first viewing.
I'm glad it wasn't too confusing; I was afraid of making a fool of myself with this. And I got The Machinist on the first try too. But then I spent a half an hour explaining it to another chick I watched it with. Ugh.
(Still need to see Momento though)
Dude you totally do. It is such a good movie!

And now? I'm being attacked by bunnies. I have three pages of another SPN fic going and more bunnies lines up around the corner including the Linc/Michael one and a Dean/Michael one.

The last line is chilling.
Titles (were you just waiting? I was on vacation): "Once, Almost" (too spoilery?), "Wreckage", "The Toll of the Highway" (!), "Bad Road", "Cost of Mileage", "Force of Impact", Collision Damage", "Hard Mileage".
Enough?
April 18 2006, 21:39:10 UTC 6 years ago
I really wanted to make it feel real, and if you're eight and have been having dreams like that? I don't think you'd even need to have their background o have a total shit-fit over it.
The last line is chilling.
Thank you!

I figured you were on vacation or something. And? I like "Wreckage," I think I'm gonna use that one, thank you!

Please someone tell me exactly how sammy saved dean with his powers? Thanks. I really liked the prose. Sorry Im dense today....
April 18 2006, 22:36:33 UTC 6 years ago
The first time around (With the blood and the clicks) was Sammy dreaming about the crash. The second time around was Sammy recognizing everything from his dream and throwing a tantrum until Dean sat in the backseat with him and out of the danger zone.

& then the last few bits made it click & i had to go back & read it all again.
i adore stories that make me do that. i don't know why, but i do.
wonderful job. very powerful. very accurate; it almost seems like kripke actually wrote this bit himself. (:

Yeah, that was... strong. And really, really good. I didn't realise until I had finished that the first bit had been a dream, but I guess that was the point, wasn't it? *slaps head*
This was incredible, short but really powerful. (And I love reading wee!Sammy fics, and fics about Sam's powers, so this was basically the perfect combination. *grins*) And it made me happy that there was a Circle K. (Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure. Hee.)
Would you mind if I put this in my memories?

Thank you,, I'm glad you liked it!
And it made me happy that there was a Circle K. (Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure. Hee.)
Had to do that, I live in Phoenix so we have Circle K's everywhere. And? Phoenix subbed for San Dimas. Our Metro Center Mall is San Dimas Mall and out Golfland Sunsplash was Waterloo.
Would you mind if I put this in my memories?
I would be so completely honored!

Especially that. Probably my favorite part, because it's just so.. whoa. One of those 'have to read again because the words affect you so much that you have to make sure you get them right' parts. Lovely.

But I love how little Sam realizes what might happen and figures out a way to stop it.
The last line is just GUH and hits you hard, you know?
But wow. I loved it from start to finish. :-)
April 22 2006, 05:43:26 UTC 6 years ago
Thank you! It seemed to me like a way Dean would learn how to sleep in the car, head under the dash to keep the sun out of his eyes in the middle of the day.

Thank you, I wanted something that would stick with you after it was done.
But wow. I loved it from start to finish. :-)
Thank you! I'm glad you enjoyed it!

And? I've got like four hand-written pages of... something that's gonna get chopped and restructed and I have a War Wounds fic for them I'm trying to outline in my head right now.

This was absolutely incredible. I'm pretty much speechless right now, such a powerful story. I'm so envious of your writing style and how you can say so much in such a compact form, every time I try to write a one shot or a drabble it morphs into something huge and long winded. You seem to have mastered the technique though, this was brilliant, just brilliant.
Wow. I hereby declare myself a fan.

I'm very glad you enjoyed this story; I'm oddly rpoud of it because it came out really a lot like how I wanted it to.
I actually get intimidated by fics in this fandom a lot because there are some amazing fics in this fandom and many of them are lengthy and beautiful and I'm more of a... tease really. A glimpse here and a small glance there, just enough to make you want more.
